Manufacturer Notes: Burtis P. Soper....The 1850 census listed him as employing five potter: Daniel, George, Samuel, and William Morse, and Russell Elisworth, the Troy stoneware maker. In addition, a laborer is listed, Burtis Soper, who later was employed as a potter at Fort Edward and West Troy.... ...Farrars were members of the great potting family of Vermont, New York, and Canada. For a brief time one of them, in association with Burtis Soper, ran the Galesville kiln, evidenced by ware stamped FARRAR & SOPER / GALESVILLE.... .../ & Co / FORT EDWARD / NEW YORK, and a miniature churn, only seven inches high, which bears an incised flower and the inscription Julia F. Soper, Fort Edward, N. Y. Julia was the daughter of the potter Burtis Soper, who worked at Fort Edward after learning the trade at Galesville. She lived to the age of seventy-eight and was buried at Greenwich in 1936, six years before Fort Edward's last pottery closed its doors. Moses C. Farrar was a young member of this firm is unclear, for only two stoneware vessels have been located bearing the mark FARRAR & SOPER / GALESVILLE.
